Local Capacity Development

Turning Local Participation into Long-Term Capability

OML’s approach to local capacity development is centred on creating opportunities for Kenyan people and enterprises to participate meaningfully in complex logistics operations and build sustainable capabilities within the industry.

As a 100% Kenyan-owned logistics company, we understand that strong local content requires more than local representation. It requires the development of people, businesses and capabilities that can support increasingly sophisticated projects.

Our focus is therefore on strengthening the local logistics ecosystem around the projects and communities where we operate.

Building a Stronger Local Logistics Ecosystem

We support local participation through three interconnected areas:

People
Creating pathways for Kenyan nationals to develop the technical and professional capabilities required by demanding logistics operations.

Businesses
Engaging in-country suppliers and service providers, helping strengthen local participation in the logistics supply chain.

Enterprise
Supporting opportunities for Kenyan nationals to participate in logistics asset ownership and develop their own commercial capacity.

Through this approach, local content becomes part of the operational ecosystem rather than a standalone initiative.

From Employment to Enterprise

One of our pilot initiatives has explored how Kenyan nationals can participate in the upstream oil and gas logistics value chain as equipment owners.

By providing letters of intent to support financing applications and subsequently managing deployed equipment, OML helps connect local ownership with the technical and contractual requirements of major projects.

The model demonstrates how local participation can extend beyond employment into entrepreneurship and asset ownership.

Strengthening Local Economic Inclusion

Our procurement of goods and services from businesses within Kenya and our host communities creates opportunities for local enterprises to participate in project supply chains.

These relationships contribute to economic inclusion while helping build a network of local businesses capable of supporting the logistics and industrial sectors.

Our goal is simple: more local capability, stronger local enterprises and greater Kenyan participation in the value chains driving Africa’s growth.

Workplace Diversification

Creating Opportunity Across Every Function

OML Africa Logistics is an equal opportunity employer committed to building a diverse and inclusive workforce where people can develop their careers based on their skills, capability and potential.

We recognise that diversity is important across the entire organisation, not only in traditionally office-based roles. Our workforce brings together people across operations, logistics coordination, procurement, human resources, health, safety & environment, finance, business development, administration and other technical and support functions, with each function contributing to the way we deliver for our clients.

Encouraging Women in Traditionally Male-Dominated Areas

The logistics and transport industry has traditionally been male-dominated, particularly in operational, technical and field-based roles.

OML is committed to encouraging greater participation of women across these areas, including logistics coordination, transport operations, equipment-related roles and other positions where women have historically been underrepresented.

As we continue to recruit and develop talent, we are creating more opportunities for women to pursue careers across the organisation rather than limiting their participation to particular types of work.

This commitment extends across the business, from operations and logistics to procurement, finance, human resources and business development.

Diversity Across the Organisation

For OML, workplace diversification is about creating a workforce that draws talent from a wider pool of people and gives individuals the opportunity to contribute across different functions.

Our approach includes supporting professional development, creating pathways for career growth and fostering a workplace culture built around respect, dignity and equal opportunity.

We recognise that people bring different experiences, perspectives and strengths to the workplace. Creating room for these differences supports collaboration, learning and the development of stronger teams.

Building an Inclusive Workplace

Our commitment to workplace inclusion is also reflected in practical workplace measures. OML provides paid maternity leave, flexible working arrangements and annual gender-sensitivity training, while working to increase women’s representation across the organisation and in management.

These initiatives sit within our wider commitment to providing employees with fair employment conditions that promote growth, dignity and well-being.

We are continuing to create an environment where women and men can build meaningful careers across the full breadth of the logistics business.

For OML, workplace diversity means making opportunity available across the organisation and ensuring that talent is not defined by gender or by traditional assumptions about who belongs in a particular role.
